Success Leaves Clues

Success Leaves Clues

If you’ve been around for a while, you’ve probably heard the term, “Success Leaves Clues.”  You’ve also probably asked yourself, “What does that really mean?”

Well…you’re not alone.  I’ve asked myself the very same question and what I’ve found as follows…

Most people identify success with money.  So when they hear the term success leaves clues, what generally comes to mind is fancy cars, a big house with a pool and lots of expensive clothes and exotic vacations.  And while that may be a part of it, those clues are not always the ones you want to find or duplicate when it comes down to success.

Don’t Fall for Superficial Success

A lot of “things” that most people associate with success are really superficial and as a result, that type of success is short lived.  I’ll give you a few examples.  If you’ve ever been in the network marketing or mlm industry, you’ll see a lot of leaders that come into money get excited and go out and buy fast cars, fancy watches and expensive clothes.  You see the same thing happen to ball players and entertainers.  And I’m not saying anything is wrong with that.  But before you know it, they will look up and find themselves having to file for bankruptcy due to issues with the IRS or due to some other type of drama.

That’s not the kind of success you need in your life because it’s so short lived.  And that’s not the kind of success you’re really looking for anyway.  You may be saying to yourself, “How do you know what I want?”  Well, let me tell you how I know.  I know because if you do this one exercise it will reveal what you really want and it reveals the same truth every time.  So here goes:

Take out a sheet of paper and write down 100 things that you want out of life.  Don’t stop until you get to 100.  I promise you this…by the time you’re finished with this exercise, most of the items on the list will have nothing to do with superficial success or “things.”  You will most likely have more items on your list like peace of mind, serenity, love, happiness etc.  Because that’s what most people REALLY want.  All of that other stuff is just a mask that lulls people into a false sense of happiness.  This is why most super rich people tend to give a lot of their money away.  Not just because it’s the right thing to do (and because of tax purposes), but because people can get tired of STUFF!  Things and toys do not equal success : )

Seek Substantive Success

Seek the type of success that has meaning.  This is the type of success that legacies are based on.  And they’re based on things like good work ethic, honesty and integrity, confidence and good will.  It’s the kind of success that you can model that can take you from good to great.  Because at the end of the day, people won’t really remember what type of car you drove (some people may argue with me about this), they also won’t remember what you wore (some people may argue with me about this too), but they will remember how you made them feel.

If you can assist a group of people in solving a major problem, you will have the kind of success that will last you a lifetime.  You will have substantive success…the kind that will pay you over and over again.  People not only will remember you, but your legacy will live on even when you’re dead a gone.  Look at people like Napoleon Hill and Jim Rohn or even Tony Robbins or Oprah.  They assist people and solve problems.  Notice I didn’t use past tense even though two of them are dead and two are still living.  I used present tense because their work will continue to live on even after death.

So as most of us travel down this road of seeking success, I leave you this…don’t seek to make money, seek to make a difference and don’t seek the kind of success that makes you Temporary, seek the kind that makes you LEGENDARY.

With your success in mind,
