52 Week Money Challenge in Reverse

52-Week Money Challenge

It was the beginning of the New Year and I happened to be fumbling around Facebook and I ran across something called the 52 Week Money Challenge.  The 52 Week Money Challenge is a simple savings plan that allows you to save $1,378 by the end of the year.  You will do this by saving $1 dollar each week and adding $1 to that amount each week.  By the end of the year the maximum amount that you will have to save in a week is $52.  This is a really cool challenge for those who feel strapped for cash at the end of the year and find themselves struggling to buy Christmas gifts for their families.  This could be a great way to get into the habit of savings in general.

But Wait! Why not do the 52 Week Money Challenge in Reverse

How do you do that?  I’m glad you asked.  Instead of waiting until the end of the year to save the higher amounts start off the year saving the higher amounts.  For example, start off the New Year at Week 1 saving $52 and Week 2 you can save $51, this way at the end of the year, you do not have to burden yourself with the higher amount of savings, you can bear the brunt  of this higher amount of savings at the beginning of the year.

The challenge also calls for you to take the money and stash it away in a jar where you can see it.  Well, this would not work for me for a couple of reasons.  First, I would probably be like most people tempted to take the money out of the jar and if I wasn’t tempted I know my teenage daughter would be tempted to take it.  (And yes. My daughter would find some reason why she needed the money and would definitely take it.  She seems to think that what’s mine is also hers.)  So…what do you do in cases like this?

Well, you open up an account with Capital One 360 (formerly ING Direct).  This is an online savings account that pays you interest.  Some of the features of this type of account are:

  • No fees, no minimums, earn interest: Max out your savings with a variable 0.75% Annual Percentage Yield (effective 2/19/2014). Plus, 360 Savings is linked to your current checking.
  • You’ll be stashing it away: Open multiple accounts (and nickname them), track great saves with My Savings Goals Opens a new window and put your savings on auto-pilot with an Automatic Savings Plan Opens a new window.
  • We have your back: Your deposits are FDIC Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation–insured up to $250,000 per depositor.
  • You’ll be part of Savers’ Nation: Join millions of Savers already living the money-in-the-bank life.

These are some really cool features that will make savings fun and to top it off, now instead of  your money being in a jar it will be in an account that earns interest.  And you know what is the best part about that?  Now you will have saved far more than $1,378, because of the interest you will have earned, especially by saving the largest amount first.  So why not do it and Pay Yourself First.  If you do the 52 Week Money Challenge this way by the end of the first month you will have saved over $200.00

So if you’re game and want to get started, let’s do it.  Leave a comment below or hit me up on Facebook letting me know that you got started.

A Positive Attitude Begins with Positive Self Talk and Thoughts

postive-attitudeA positive attitude is an essential ingredient to success.  One way to achieve a positive attitude is by changing our self talk.  Successful people are positive thinkers and thought leaders.  They know that they can get it done and they know that they have what it takes to teach others to do the same.

It all starts with your attitude which can be changed in an instant.  It starts with being positive and constantly telling yourself that you can achieve that BIG DREAM.  Constantly affirm to yourself via positive affirmations and remember that if you have 1% doubt you’re out.  One drop of poison can kill you dead and so can negative thoughts that infiltrate your brain.  Positive affirmations yields success – Period.

Negative thoughts pop up in our minds primarily due to fear.  Fear will cause you to talk yourself out of doing the very thing that you need to do to succeed.  So, don’t pay attention to those negative thoughts when they jump into your head.  As a matter of fact do yourself a favor and wear a rubber band and every time a negative thought pops in your head, pop your wrist with that rubber band and make sure that you use it to switch your thinking.

Your thoughts will have a direct impact on your attitude.  They will determine if you’re happy or sad.  Stinking thinking usually yields a funky attitude.  When our self talk and thoughts are happy, so is our attitude.  This is not just my opinion.  Studies have shown this to be true. So, if you want to when friends and influence people, do yourself a favor and change your thoughts and self-talk.

You may also have to change the people you hang around.  Studies have shown that people generally earn the average of the 7 people they hang around the most, therefore if you’re not earning what you feel you should then maybe you should hang around new people.  This especially holds true for negative people.  Negative people not only can have a negative impact on your attitude, but they also can have a negative impact on your income.

You’ve heard the saying, “What you think about, you bring about.”  So if you control your thoughts, you can control your future.  While it is easy for me to talk about this in an article, it is not easy to do.  Real change happens one second at a time.  So, if you want to control your self-talk you will have to do it one second and one thought at a time.  But challenge yourself to do it.  You won’t regret that you did.

Preparing for a New Year

As the end of the year approaches most individuals begin to think about goals and plans for the New Year.  But before you begin to rush into planning for a New Year, it’s always a good thing to take some time out to review the accomplishments from the current year.  Try not to focus on what you haven’t achieved and make sure you spend some time focusing on what you have achieved.  Pat yourself on the back and give yourself a round of applause for all that you have done.  If you don’t celebrate you, who will?

Decide What You Want

Deciding what you want to do in the New Year is the key to making BIG things happen.  Most people struggle because they lack clear goals and purpose.  I have often said that there is nothing more powerful than a mind that is made up.  A convinced mind with laser-like focus can ignite a fire.  Lighting a fire underneath yourself is a good thing.  It’s like starting your engine.  If you decide what it is that you want and set S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Sensitive) goals, you will stand a better chance of achieving them in the New Year.

Design Your Own M.A.P.

Your M.A.P. represents your very own Massive Action Plan.  Creating a solid plan of action will certainly assist you in having a successful New Year.  Breaking your goals down into bite size pieces can help you to achieve them in a more manageable fashion.  When you lay them out into smaller tasks, they become easier for you to act on them.  They become your yellow brick road to your Land of Oz.  Stay on the path until you reach your final destination.  Don’t breakdown before you breakthrough.

Life is a marathon and not a sprint.  The race is won not by the swift, but by the one who endures it til the end.  So keep going.   Make sure that you sign up for my 5-day Boot Camp to help you get clear and focused on what it is that you want to do.

PS: Believe in yourself and you will make it.
